Spinocerebellum

The spinocerebellum is a functional subdivision of the cerebellum that comprises the vermis and the intermediate (paravermal) zones of the cerebellar hemispheres. It receives somatosensory and proprioceptive information from the spinal cord via the dorsal and ventral spinocerebellar tracts, along with additional inputs from visual and vestibular systems. This integration provides a real-time map of body position and movement to help regulate ongoing motor activity and posture.

Anatomically, the spinocerebellum sends outputs through the deep cerebellar nuclei: the vermis projects mainly to the fastigial nucleus, while the intermediate zones project to the interposed nuclei (emboliform and globose). From these nuclei, signals reach brainstem motor centers, including the vestibular nuclei, reticular formation, and red nucleus, thereby influencing axial and proximal limb muscles and coordinating movement, particularly during gait and posture maintenance.

Functionally, the spinocerebellum acts as a real-time comparator, integrating proprioceptive and other sensory feedback with motor commands to generate corrective signals that adjust muscle tone and movement. The vermal region is principally involved in trunk and proximal control, while the paravermal/intermediate zones refine limb movements and distal coordination, contributing to smooth, coordinated locomotion.

Clinical significance typically centers on motor incoordination. Disruption of spinocerebellar circuits can cause ataxia with gait and stance instability, trunk imbalance, dysmetria, dysdiadochokinesia, hypotonia, and overall impairment of limb coordination. These signs reflect impaired processing of sensory feedback and maladaptive motor control.
