Spinnikvantnumero, often abbreviated as m_s, is a fundamental quantum number that describes the intrinsic angular momentum of a particle, specifically its spin. It is a property inherent to fundamental particles like electrons, protons, and neutrons, as well as composite particles like atoms. Unlike orbital angular momentum, spin angular momentum is not associated with the physical motion of a particle through space but is an intrinsic characteristic.

The spin quantum number can only take on specific discrete values. For fermions, such as electrons, protons, and neutrons, the spin quantum number can be either +1/2 or -1/2. These two values represent the two possible orientations of the particle's spin, often colloquially referred to as "spin up" and "spin down." For bosons, like photons, the spin quantum number can take on integer values, with photons having a spin of 1.
