Spiketestit

Spiketestit is a hypothetical framework for evaluating the reliability and characteristics of neuronal spike data. In this usage, spiketestit refers to a set of statistical tests and visualization tools designed to assess how spikes are timed relative to external events, ongoing network activity, or stimuli. The aim is to quantify timing precision, regularity, and nonrandom structure in spike trains, and to distinguish genuine neuronal patterns from noise and artefacts.

Typical components include quality assessment of spike sorting, analysis of inter-spike intervals, peri-stimulus time histograms, cross-correlation with reference signals, and entropy-based measures, as well as bootstrap or permutation tests using surrogate data. Surrogates may include trial shuffling, jittering of spike times, or resampling with replacement. Significance is assessed by comparing observed statistics to the surrogate distribution.

Applications of spiketestit appear in electrophysiology and calcium imaging analyses, particularly for verifying spike sorting quality, benchmarking algorithm performance, and providing teaching examples of spike statistics. The approach is used to flag nonstationarities, rhythmic patterns, or artefacts that could bias interpretation.

Limitations include the lack of a formal, standardized protocol given its informal status, potential dependence on surrogate choices, and sensitivity to data quantity and recording conditions. History notes that spiketestit emerged in speculative discussions within computational neuroscience and has not achieved broad consensus or widespread adoption.
