Spermid

Spermid is not a widely recognized standalone compound in standard chemical nomenclature. In many cases, the term appears as a misspelling, shorthand, or informal abbreviation for spermidine, a naturally occurring polyamine that is widely discussed in biochemistry and cellular biology. When encountered as spermid, it is typically intended to refer to the molecule known as spermidine rather than a distinct chemical entity with that exact name.

Spermidine is a polyamine found in nearly all living cells, where it participates in vital cellular processes. It is involved in the stabilization of nucleic acids, regulation of ion channels, and modulation of gene expression. In recent years, spermidine has attracted attention for its role in promoting autophagy, a cellular renewal process, and for associations with aging and longevity in some model organisms. Its effects are context-dependent and the subject of ongoing research.

Biosynthesis and metabolism of spermidine begin with the amino acid ornithine. Ornithine decarboxylase generates putrescine, which is then converted to spermidine by spermidine synthase using a donor molecule derived from decarboxylated S-adenosylmethionine. Spermidine can be further converted to spermine by spermine synthase. Regulation of this pathway influences cellular polyamine levels, impacting growth, differentiation, and stress responses. Polyamine levels are maintained by a balance of synthesis, degradation, uptake, and excretion, and are influenced by diet and gut microbiota.

Dietary intake provides appreciable amounts of spermidine, especially from aged cheeses, mushrooms, soy products, legumes, and whole grains. In humans, observational studies link higher spermidine intake with various health associations, but causal relationships remain under investigation. Spermidine supplements are marketed in some contexts, though clinical evidence for therapeutic benefits is still evolving.
