Spellenclubs

Spellenclub, or spellenclubs in plural, is a term used in Dutch-speaking contexts for a social group whose members meet regularly to play games, most commonly board games, card games, and sometimes role-playing or abstract strategy games. The main aim is recreation and social interaction, but many clubs also promote game literacy, fair play, and community involvement.

Clubs are typically voluntary, non-profit associations run by members and supervised by a small board. They may operate on a membership basis with periodic fees, or invite-only membership, and some are open to walk-ins during designated hours. Most maintain a lending library or game collection that members can borrow or try before buying. Venues include libraries, community centers, cultural houses, or partner venues such as cafes.

Common activities include regular game nights, where members bring or borrow games; informal tournaments or demonstrations of new releases; themed evenings; and social events or workshops on game design or strategy. Some clubs also organize outreach to schools or youth groups to encourage playing and critical thinking.

Spellenclubs contribute to local culture by providing inclusive spaces for people of varying ages and backgrounds to meet and play. They may collaborate with regional federations or national associations, share resources online, and host events open to non-members. While many clubs focus primarily on hobby board games, others welcome role-playing games, party games, or family-friendly titles.
