Spellands

Spellands is a fictional archipelago and polity used in fantasy settings. It refers to both the maritime region and its culturally integrated practice of magic. The name derives from the local term for lands shaped by spellcraft.

The Spellands comprise about a dozen islands in a temperate sea, with islets and reefs surrounding a central saltwater basin. The largest islands include Nivarion (the capital), Lumen (center of learning), Calder (industrial hub), Mire (wetlands), and Kestrel (naval outpost). Terrain ranges from volcanic highlands to pine forests and marshy coasts. The population, known as Spelllanders, is ethnically diverse and predominantly urban on the larger islands.

The Spellands are governed as a federated confederation, called the Grand Conclave. Each island administers its own laws but delegates representation to the Conclave. A ceremonial Archon serves as a neutral figurehead, while executive functions rest with island administrations. The High Court oversees legal matters, and mage guilds regulate magical practice. The Aegis Code limits spell use to protect non-magical inhabitants and maintain public safety.

The economy blends agriculture, artisanal crafts, and magical services. Trade focuses on rare reagents, enchanted items, and scholarly manuscripts. Education centers around the Academy of Lumen Studies, which trains mages, scholars, and artificers. Cultural life features rune fairs and demonstrations of controlled spellcraft.

Early settlers formed loose maritime alliances before uniting into the Grand Conclave in the late medieval era. The Spellands have pursued neutrality in external conflicts and emphasize internal development and regional cooperation.
