The term combines the Danish word speditør with the English freight, and in practice denotes the coordination of international and domestic shipments.

Freight forwarders act as intermediaries between shippers and transport carriers. They assess shipment requirements, select modes (air, sea, road, rail, or multimodal), negotiate rates, book space, and organize handling at origin and destination. Customs clearance and compliance are central components. Forwarders work with customs authorities, apply Incoterms to allocate responsibilities, duties, and risk, and ensure duties are paid. They provide tracking and exception management, enabling visibility throughout transit and helping to manage delays, damages, or losses.

Regulation and professional practice: freight forwarders are typically regulated by national authorities and professional bodies; many adhere to FIATA guidelines and undertake ongoing training. Liability frameworks vary by contract and mode of transport; insurance is commonly offered to cover cargo damage or loss, with coverage levels tailored to cargo value and risk.

Industry role: Speditørerfreight services help exporters, importers, and manufacturers optimize cost, transit times, risk, and administrative burden. The exact service mix varies by customer needs, carrier network, and regulatory context, reflecting the diverse capabilities of modern freight forwarding.
