Spectralisme

Spectralisme, or spectral music, is a compositional approach that originated in France in the 1970s. It treats the timbre of a sound as the primary material and builds harmony, rhythm, and form from the spectral content of sounds—typically the partials and overtones that constitute a tone. Composers analyze sounds from instruments or synthesized timbres and derive pitch collections, scales, and processes from their spectra, often employing computer analysis and signal processing.

Origins and development: The movement emerged from the French avant-garde scene, with central figures such as Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail developing methods to extract harmonic and timbral relationships from spectra. Their work reflects the Parisian contemporary music milieu and links to electronic music centers of the era. Other composers associated with spectralism include Hugues Dufourt, Kaija Saariaho, and Philippe Manoury, among others, who expanded spectral thinking through varied approaches.

Techniques and practice: Spectral composers frequently begin with a spectrum derived from a real sound or a synthetic timbre, then create scales, chords, and progressions by transforming that spectrum—focusing on overtones, subtracting partials, or shifting spectral content. They may employ extended techniques, microtonality, and electronic processing to realize spectra in performance. Works often emphasize long, slowly evolving processes and timbral change over traditional melodic development.
