Sparrenburg
Sparrenburg is a ruined medieval hilltop castle located in the hills west of the town of Friesdorf in the state of Thuringia, Germany. The site first appears in documentary records in the early 13th century, when it was owned by the local branch of the Wettin family. Its name, derived from the German words for “spars” or “timber,” refers to the timber-framed keep that formed the heart of the fortress.
Strategically positioned on a steep rise overlooking the Thuringian Basin, Sparrenburg served as a defensive outpost
During the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle changed hands several times, ultimately falling into the possession
Today, the remaining walls and earthworks of Sparrenburg are a heritage site managed by the Thuringian State
