Spannungsstabilität refers to the ability of a system, particularly an electrical power system, to maintain voltages at acceptable levels during and after disturbances. These disturbances can include changes in load, generator outages, or faults. Maintaining voltage stability is crucial for the reliable operation of power systems, as deviations from acceptable voltage ranges can lead to equipment damage, power outages, and cascading failures.

Voltage stability is influenced by several factors, including the distance of the load from the generation sources, the impedance of the transmission lines, the characteristics of the loads themselves (e.g., motor loads' behavior under voltage sags), and the presence of reactive power compensation devices like capacitor banks or synchronous condensers. A system's voltage stability is often assessed by examining its voltage-current (V-I) characteristics or by performing dynamic simulations of its response to disturbances.

Instability can manifest in two primary ways: voltage collapse, where voltages rapidly decline to very low levels, or voltage oscillations, where voltages fluctuate around a steady state. Reactive power plays a key role in voltage stability; insufficient reactive power generation or excessive reactive power consumption can lead to voltage sags. Therefore, proper management of reactive power resources is essential for ensuring voltage stability. Modern power systems employ various control strategies, such as generator voltage regulators, load tap changers, and dynamic reactive power support, to enhance their voltage stability margins.
