Spangles

Spangles are small, shiny decorative discs used to embellish fabric, costumes, and crafts. They are related to sequins and are typically made from metal or plastic. Most spangles have a hole near the edge or a central hole to allow sewing or to attach via adhesive backings; sizes range from a few millimeters to over a centimeter in diameter. Shapes include circular, star, or other motifs, with finishes that are metallic, iridescent, or colored.

They are widely used in dance and stage costumes, ballroom gowns, and decorative textiles for festive wear. In crafts, spangles are used for embellishments on bags, jackets, scrapbooks, and home decor projects. They can be attached by threading, stitching, or self-adhesive backs, depending on the product.

Spangles are produced by stamping metal into discs or by molding plastic shapes; some have cutouts or faceted surfaces to maximize reflectivity. They may be sold loose or attached to strings or tapes for easier application. The term dates from the 16th century English word for a small reflective disk, and while its precise origins are unclear, it conveys the sense of sparkle associated with the objects.
