Spajani

Spajani is a traditional dance form originating from the Indian state of Kerala. It is performed during the Onam festival, which is celebrated annually in the month of Chingam (August-September) to honor the harvest and the mythical King Mahabali. The dance is characterized by its rhythmic footwork, intricate hand gestures, and the use of traditional instruments such as the chenda (a double-headed drum) and the madal (a cylindrical drum).

The performance typically begins with a group of dancers, known as spajanis, who wear traditional attire and carry a spade (spade) on their heads. They perform a series of intricate footwork patterns, known as "kuthiyattam," which are synchronized with the rhythm of the music. The dancers also perform a series of hand gestures, known as "mudras," which are used to convey emotions and tell a story.

Spajani is a communal dance form, and the dancers often perform in groups, with each dancer taking turns to lead the group. The dance is accompanied by traditional Kerala music, which is characterized by its use of the veena (a string instrument) and the mridangam (a percussion instrument).
