Spadetypes

Spadetypes is a formal classification system for digging spades used in agriculture, construction, and archaeology. It groups spades by blade geometry, handle integration, construction materials, and intended use, with the aim of facilitating tool selection, maintenance, and historical analysis.

The classification rests on several axes. Blade geometry covers tip shape (square-point, pointed, or rounded), blade length, and curvature. Blade cross-section and edge bevel describe thickness and the angle of the cutting edge. Handle type and attachment note whether the blade is connected by a socket, tang, or a D-grip, and whether the construction is wooden, fiberglass, or metal. Intended use distinguishes garden spades, trenching or construction spades, utility or general-purpose spades, and specialized excavation spades for archaeology or restoration.

Common types often cited within the system include the square-point utility spade, designed for moving soil and loading, the pointed spade for breaking ground, the trench spade with a long narrow blade for narrow cuts, and the garden spade with a wider blade for soil turnover. Material choices range from durable carbon steel to corrosion-resistant stainless steel, with handles made of wood, fiberglass, or metal.
