Sovellukseksi

Sovellukseksi is the translative form of the Finnish noun sovellus, meaning an application or software. It is used to express change of state or function, typically indicating that something is to become or function as an application.

In Finnish grammar, the translative case (suffix -ksi) marks a shift into a new role or state. This contrasts with the essive case (suffix -na/-nä), which describes a temporary or current state. Therefore sovellukseksi is suitable in contexts where a system, program, or concept is being described as intended to become or operate as an application, rather than simply being an application at the moment.

Common usage patterns include verbs of change or creation, such as muuttaa (to turn into) or kehittää (to develop). For example, hankkeen tavoitteena on muuttaa järjestelmä sovellukseksi means “the project’s goal is to turn the system into an application.” Another example: uusi ohjelmisto voidaan kehittää sovellukseksi, “the new software can be developed into an application.” If describing something currently functioning as an application, the essive form sovelluksena is often used (for example, ohjelmisto toimii sovelluksena mobiililaitteella → “the software operates as an application on a mobile device”).
