Sourcesrenewables is a term used in energy literature to denote the set of energy sources that are replenished naturally on a human timescale and are considered renewable for planning and policy purposes. In most contexts it includes solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, biomass, and certain marine energies such as tidal and wave power.

Although there is some variation in classification, sourcesrenewables generally refers to electricity generation as well as heat and transportation energy supplied by these technologies. They are characterized by low, and in some cases near-zero, operational greenhouse gas emissions when running, and by their dependence on environmental conditions such as sunlight, wind, water flow, or heat.

Role and deployment: These sources are central to decarbonization strategies, often in combination with energy storage, electric grids, and demand management. They offer scalable options from distributed rooftop solar to large hydro dams and offshore wind farms.

Challenges and considerations: Intermittency and variability require grid flexibility, storage, or backup capacity. Siting, land and water use, ecological and social impacts, and mineral supply chains influence project viability. Economic trends show cost declines, but financing, permitting, and supply chain resilience affect deployment rates. Policy frameworks and market designs shape the pace of integration.
