The term derives from suspendere, and the related noun suspeso (past participle sospeso) appears in phrases that indicate a credit or commitment left in limbo. In everyday language, sospeso is used to describe pending decisions or unpaid items, but it is most widely recognized through social and cultural practices that involve giving, solidarity, or mutual aid.

The best-known instance is caffè sospeso, a charitable practice in which a customer pays for an extra coffee to be claimed later by someone who cannot afford one. The origin of caffè sospeso is uncertain, but it is commonly associated with Naples in the early 2000s, gaining national attention in the following years and spreading to other cities and countries. Variants and related practices have emerged, such as pane sospeso (suspended bread) and libro sospeso (suspended book), applied in cafés, bakeries, libraries, and social programs. The practice highlights voluntary generosity and community support, though it is a voluntary gesture rather than an organized social safety net.

In modern usage, sospeso can also describe any item or decision held in reserve or awaiting fulfillment, reinforcing its core sense of temporary postponement or pending action.
