These specialized areas within a railway yard allow for the efficient sorting of individual cars or entire trains based on their destination, cargo, or required services.

The primary function of a sorteerimisrada is to enable the decoupling of cars from an incoming train and then directing them down different tracks according to a predetermined plan. This is typically achieved through a system of gradients and points (switches). Cars are pushed over a hump or crest, and gravity then carries them down a sloped track. As they descend, points are strategically set to divert them onto various sidings. Each siding is designed to hold a specific group of cars destined for the same location or purpose.

The process can be manual, with operators controlling the points, or increasingly automated. Automated systems often use car retarders to control their speed as they roll down the sorting tracks, preventing collisions and ensuring accurate placement.
