Sorbierende refers to materials that possess the property of sorption, which is the process where a substance accumulates on the surface of another or within its bulk. This accumulation can occur through two primary mechanisms: adsorption and absorption. Adsorption is a surface phenomenon where molecules of a gas, liquid, or dissolved solid adhere to the surface of a solid or liquid adsorbent. Absorption, on the other hand, is a bulk phenomenon where one substance dissolves into or permeates the bulk of another substance.

Sorbent materials are widely utilized in various industrial and scientific applications. For instance, activated carbon is a common sorbent used in air and water purification systems to remove pollutants and odors. Silica gel is another frequently employed sorbent, often used as a desiccant to absorb moisture and prevent damage to sensitive electronic equipment or food products. Chromatography, a technique for separating mixtures, relies heavily on sorbents to selectively retain different components based on their interactions with the sorbent material.

The effectiveness of a sorbent is determined by its affinity for the substance being sorbed, its surface area, and its porosity.
