Somatiques

Somatiques is a term used in biology and medicine to describe things related to the body, particularly in French-language usage. In English, the analogous term is somatic, but somatiques appears in references that address body-related contexts such as cells, tissues, and systems.

In cellular biology, somatiques typically refer to somatic cells, the cells that form the body’s tissues and organs. These cells arise from the zygote through mitotic divisions and are generally diploid in humans and other animals. Somatic cells do not contribute genetic material to offspring, so mutations acquired during an organism’s life are usually not inherited. When mutations occur in only a subset of cells, the condition is described as somatic mosaicism.

Somatic tissues include skin, muscles, bones, and most internal organs. The somatic nervous system, a component of the peripheral nervous system, controls voluntary movements and transmits sensory information from the body to the central nervous system. This system is distinct from the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary functions.

In medical usage, somatic describes physical manifestations of disease or symptoms arising from the body rather than from mental processes. For example, somatic symptoms refer to bodily expressions of illness, while somatic disorders denote conditions in which physical symptoms are prominent. The term also appears in developmental biology and cancer research to distinguish somatic cells from germline cells.
