Solventwechsel, also known as solvent exchange or solvent swap, is a common technique in chemistry used to replace one solvent with another. This process is frequently employed in various stages of chemical synthesis, purification, and analysis. The primary goal of a solvent exchange is to alter the solvent environment of a solute, which can be necessary for several reasons.

One key application of solventwechsel is in crystallization. A compound that is soluble in one solvent may be insoluble in another. By dissolving the compound in a good solvent and then gradually adding a poor solvent (or removing the good solvent by evaporation and replacing it with a poor one), precipitation of the desired solid can be induced. This is a crucial step in purifying solid compounds.

Another important use is in chromatography. Different chromatographic techniques, such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), often require specific solvent mobile phases. If a sample is prepared or isolated in a solvent that is incompatible with the chromatographic system, a solvent exchange is performed to transfer the solute into the appropriate mobile phase.

Solventwechsel can also be important for spectroscopic analysis. For example, some spectroscopic techniques have optimal solvent conditions for obtaining clear and interpretable data. Furthermore, if a reaction is carried out in a solvent that interferes with subsequent steps or analysis, exchanging it for a more suitable solvent is necessary.

The exchange is typically achieved through methods like evaporation and redissolution, where the original solvent is evaporated, and the residue is then redissolved in the new solvent. Alternatively, it can involve adding the new solvent to the existing solution and then selectively removing the original solvent, often by distillation or evaporation, taking advantage of differences in boiling points. Careful control of temperature and pressure may be required to ensure efficient and complete solvent exchange without degrading the solute.
