Solventtiväreillä, often translated as solvent-based paints, are a category of coatings that utilize organic solvents as the primary carrier for their binder and pigment components. When applied, these solvents evaporate, leaving behind a solid film of paint. This evaporation process is crucial for the drying and curing of the paint.

The binder in solvent-based paints can be a wide variety of resins, such as alkyds, acrylics, epoxies, or polyurethanes, each offering different properties in terms of durability, flexibility, and resistance to chemicals and weathering. The solvents themselves are typically hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, or ketones, chosen based on their ability to dissolve the specific binder and their evaporation rate.

Solvent-based paints are known for their excellent adhesion to various substrates, including wood, metal, and plaster. They often provide a hard, durable finish that is resistant to abrasion and impact. Furthermore, they can achieve a high gloss finish and are generally considered to have good color retention.

However, the use of organic solvents presents environmental and health concerns. Many solvents are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute to air pollution. They can also pose health risks to applicators and occupants due to their flammability and potential for respiratory irritation or other toxic effects. Consequently, there is a global trend towards reducing VOC content in paints, leading to the development and increasing popularity of water-based and other lower-VOC alternatives. Despite these challenges, solvent-based paints remain a preferred choice for certain demanding applications where their superior performance characteristics are essential.
