Solventdirected describes the deliberate use of solvent properties to influence chemical reactions and related processes, with the solvent playing an active role in directing outcome rather than merely serving as a medium. The approach encompasses how solvent choice affects reaction rates, selectivity, and product distribution through solvation, coordination, and noncovalent interactions.

The underlying mechanisms reflect how solvation stabilizes or destabilizes transition states and intermediates, how coordinating solvents interact with catalysts or reagents, and how solvent–substrate interactions influence pathways. Key factors include solvent polarity and dielectric constant, coordinating ability, hydrogen-bond donor or acceptor strength, viscosity, and whether the solvent is protic or aprotic. Mixtures or co-solvents can further tune these effects, sometimes yielding synergistic changes in selectivity that are not predictable from individual components alone.

Applications of solvent-directed strategies span a broad range of areas. In organic synthesis, solvent choice can tilt chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, or stereoselectivity; in organometallic catalysis, solvents can modify the active species and reaction manifold; and in crystallization, solvent systems guide polymorph formation and solubility-driven selectivity. Beyond reactivity, solvent-directed considerations also impact process economics and safety, as certain solvents can reduce waste, enable greener pathways, or pose handling challenges.

Limitations include the system-specific nature of solvent effects, which often require empirical study and careful optimization. Reproducibility can be sensitive to concentration, temperature, and impurities, and solvent changes may introduce cost, toxicity, or environmental concerns. Despite these caveats, solvent-directed strategies are integral to solvent engineering and green chemistry, offering a route to increased control and efficiency in chemical processes.
