Soluvaiheet refers to the stages of the cell cycle, the ordered series of events that take place in a cell leading to its division and duplication. This cycle is fundamental to the growth and reproduction of all living organisms. The cell cycle is broadly divided into two main phases: interphase and the mitotic phase.

Interphase is the longest phase of the cell cycle, during which the cell grows and duplicates its DNA. It is further subdivided into three subphases: G1 (first gap), S (synthesis), and G2 (second gap). In G1, the cell grows and carries out its normal metabolic functions. During the S phase, DNA replication occurs, ensuring that each daughter cell receives a complete set of chromosomes. The G2 phase is a period of further growth and preparation for mitosis, where the cell synthesizes proteins necessary for cell division.

The mitotic phase, often referred to as M phase, is the period when the cell divides its duplicated genetic material and cytoplasm to form two daughter cells. This phase consists of mitosis, the division of the nucleus, and cytokinesis, the division of the cytoplasm. Mitosis is further broken down into prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase, each characterized by specific chromosomal movements and nuclear envelope changes. Cytokinesis typically overlaps with the later stages of mitosis, completing the process of cell division. The tightly regulated progression through these soluvaiheet is crucial for maintaining genomic stability and preventing uncontrolled cell proliferation, which can lead to diseases like cancer.
