Solunäytetyyppejä are methods used to visualize and study cells under a microscope. Different types of sample preparation techniques are employed depending on the type of cell, the desired level of detail, and the staining or labeling methods to be used.

A common method is the wet mount, where a fresh sample, often from a liquid source like pond water or a biological fluid, is placed on a slide with a drop of liquid and covered with a coverslip. This allows for observation of living, motile organisms. For more stable viewing, especially of fixed cells, smear preparations are used. In this technique, cells are spread thinly onto a slide, allowed to air dry, and then often fixed with heat or chemicals. This is frequently used for blood cells or bacterial cultures.

Tissue samples require different approaches. Histological preparations involve taking a small piece of tissue, embedding it in a solid medium like paraffin wax or frozen resin, and then slicing it into very thin sections using a microtome. These thin sections are then mounted on slides and stained to highlight different cellular structures. Cytological samples, which focus on individual cells rather than organized tissue, can be obtained through fine-needle aspiration or by collecting exfoliated cells, such as from a Pap smear. These cells are then processed similarly to smear preparations.

Specialized techniques also exist. Imprints involve pressing a tissue sample directly onto a slide, capturing cells on the surface. Cell blocks are created when fine particles or cellular debris from fluid samples are processed into a solid block, allowing for sectioning and staining similar to tissue histology. Each solunäytetyyppi has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on the specific diagnostic or research question.
