Softshellids
Softshellids are a family of freshwater turtles belonging to the order Testudines. They are characterized by their leathery, flexible shells, which lack the hard, bony plates found in most other turtles. This distinctive feature gives them their common name. Softshellids are primarily found in freshwater habitats across North America, Asia, and Africa. They are typically strong swimmers and are often semi-aquatic, spending considerable time in water where they hunt for fish, amphibians, insects, and crustaceans. Their flattened bodies and webbed feet are adaptations for an aquatic lifestyle.
The family Trionychidae, which encompasses softshellids, is diverse, with numerous genera and species. Some of the
