Liquid softeners are typically used in the wash, while dryer sheets are used in the tumble dryer. They work by depositing conditioning agents on fibers, which can temporarily alter feel and reduce static cling. Potential drawbacks include residue on fabrics, reduced absorbency in towels, and environmental concerns related to surfactants or phosphates historically used in formulations. They may also interact with certain fabrics or high-efficiency machines, so users follow manufacturer guidance and test compatibility.
