Sockermoiety

Sockermoiety is a fictional sociocultural concept used in speculative anthropology and world-building to describe a dual-level system of social organization based on sock attire. In this construct, society is divided into two complementary moieties, each associated with distinct sock styles, colors, or wearing conventions, and membership in a moiety is inherited or chosen through a rite of passage.

Practices within sockermoiety involve daily signaling of affiliation, the allocation of ceremonial duties, and ritual exchange of socks to maintain alliance and balance between moieties. Ceremonies may require pairs of socks or matched sets, and marriage or alliance rules are negotiated to preserve the symmetry of the system. The wear and presentation of socks serve as visible cues of belonging and social status, while exchange rituals reinforce interdependencies between groups and support collective identity.

Sockermoiety is not a recognized term in mainstream anthropology; it is used mainly in speculative fiction and as a thought experiment to explore how clothing acts as a social signal and how dual groupings can structure kinship, economy, and ritual.
