Sockels

Sockels is the plural form of Sockel, a term used in German and Dutch to describe a base or pedestal that supports a statue, monument, architectural element, or equipment. In English, the closest terms are pedestal or plinth. Sockels serve both structural and representational functions, elevating the object for visibility and adding weight and gravity to the composition of a space.

Sockels are typically built from stone such as marble, limestone, or granite, but may also use brick, concrete, or metal. They are anchored to a foundation and finished to suit the context, ranging from rough-hewn to highly polished.
