Sobeys

Sobeys is a Canadian grocery retailer headquartered in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. It operates more than 1,600 stores across Canada under brands such as Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Food Basics and FreshCo. The company was founded in 1907 by William Forbes as a small grocery shop in Halifax and has grown into one of the country’s largest food retailers. In 1996 Sobeys merged with Safeway Canada, adding 920 stores and expanding its footprint into Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and the southern provinces. The merger created a nationwide network that serves over 40 million customers annually.

Sobeys is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol SOY and is a constituent of the S&P/TSX 60 index. It operates primarily on a “store‑and‑warehouse” model, offering fresh produce, bakery items, meat and dairy as well as private‑label products. The company has diversified into fresh produce sourcing, pharmacy services, and fuel stations attached to many outlets.

In 2015 the company announced its Climate Change Action Plan, aiming to achieve net‑zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and to reduce packaging waste. Sobeys has committed to sourcing 100 per cent of its beef, pork, and poultry from animals that have not been treated with antibiotics or growth hormones.

The Sobeys brand has a strong presence in Atlantic Canada, where it is the largest grocery chain, while Safeway anchors its operations in the Pacific Provinces. The IGA banner operates independently but under franchise agreements managed by Sobeys. The company’s recent initiatives focus on digital commerce, loyalty programs, and expanding community‑based food programs to support local suppliers and reduce food waste.
