Snaffle

A snaffle is primarily a type of horse riding bit but the term also appears as a verb meaning to snatch or steal. In riding, a snaffle bit is a simple mouthpiece connected to the bridle rings and operates by direct pressure on the horse’s mouth, without leverage on the poll.

Most snaffle bits have a single mouthpiece that may be straight or jointed, sometimes with a lozenge or French link. The mouthpiece is attached to rings at each end, and the rein attaches to the rings. Because snaffles apply pressure only through the mouth, not through leverage, they are considered milder than curb or leverage bits. Common cheek designs include eggbutt, D-ring, and full-cheek snaffles; there are many variations to suit different horses and disciplines.

Snaffle bits are widely used in training and pleasure riding and are often recommended for beginners or trained horses when light, precise signals are desired. They require soft hands and proper rein contact, and their effectiveness depends on fit and the horse’s conformation and sensitivity.

As a verb, to snaffle means to take something quickly or stealthily or to obtain something by chance. In British English, it is commonly used in informal speech.
