Smøremiddeltype refers to the classification of lubricants based on their physical state and chemical composition. These categories help determine the appropriate lubricant for a given application, considering factors like temperature, pressure, and the materials being lubricated.

The primary categories are liquid, semi-solid, and solid lubricants. Liquid lubricants, the most common type, include mineral oils, synthetic oils, and vegetable oils. They provide excellent heat dissipation and flow into tight spaces. Mineral oils are derived from petroleum and are cost-effective for general use. Synthetic oils are engineered for specific properties and offer superior performance in extreme conditions. Vegetable oils are biodegradable alternatives but may have limitations in temperature stability.

Semi-solid lubricants, commonly known as greases, consist of a base oil thickened with a soap or non-soap thickener. They are designed to stay in place and provide lubrication in applications where liquid lubricants might drip or splash away, such as in bearings or open gears. The type of thickener significantly influences the grease's properties, including its water resistance and temperature range.

Solid lubricants, such as graphite, molybdenum disulfide, and PTFE (Teflon), are used in environments where conventional oils and greases cannot function, like extremely high temperatures or vacuum conditions. They work by forming a low-friction film on the sliding surfaces.
