Smittekjeder

Smittekjeder, a Norwegian term, translates to "chain of infection" in English. It describes the transmission pathway of an infectious agent from a source to a susceptible host. Understanding smittekjeder is fundamental in epidemiology and public health for controlling the spread of diseases.

A smittekjede typically involves several links. The first link is the infectious agent itself, such as a virus, bacterium, or parasite. This agent resides in a reservoir, which can be a person, animal, or the environment. The agent then exits the reservoir through a portal of exit, like respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, or through bodily fluids. Transmission occurs via various routes, including direct contact, indirect contact through contaminated surfaces, airborne transmission, or vectors like insects. Finally, the agent enters a susceptible host through a portal of entry, such as the eyes, nose, mouth, or a break in the skin.

Breaking any link in the smittekjede can interrupt disease transmission. For instance, hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette aim to reduce the spread of infectious agents from their source. Vaccination strengthens host immunity, making them less susceptible. Environmental sanitation and vector control target the reservoir and transmission routes. Public health interventions often focus on identifying and disrupting these chains of infection to prevent outbreaks and protect communities.
