Smetona
Smetona is a Lithuanian surname most prominently associated with Antanas Smetona, a key political figure in the early 20th‑century history of Lithuania. Born on 12 December 1865 in Kaunas, then part of the Russian Empire, Smetona studied law at the University of Moscow before turning to journalism. He became an outspoken advocate for Lithuanian nationalism during the 1880s and 1890s, later working as a lawyer and public intellectual.
Smetona’s political career began in earnest after World War I when Lithuania declared independence in 1918.
Following the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1940, Smetona fled to Germany, where he died in 1944.
