Smersh
Smersh, officially the People's Commissariat of Defense's Counterintelligence Directorate, was a Soviet counterintelligence organization during World War II. The name is a portmanteau of the Russian phrase "Smert' shpionam," meaning "Death to spies." Smersh was established on April 19, 1943, by order of the People's Commissar of Defense, Joseph Stalin, consolidating and expanding the functions of previous counterintelligence bodies.
Its primary mission was to combat espionage, sabotage, and desertion within the ranks of the Red Army
Smersh's activities were characterized by a broad mandate that extended to screening returning prisoners of war
