Smershs
Smersh was a prominent counter-intelligence organization within the Soviet Union during World War II. The name Smersh is a portmanteau of the Russian phrase "Smert' Shpionam," meaning "Death to Spies." It was established in April 1943 under the People's Commissariat of Defense (NKO) and later transferred to the People's Commissariat of State Security (NKGB).
