Slibujete

Slibujete is a traditional Czech folk custom associated with the celebration of Easter, particularly in the regions of Moravia and parts of Bohemia. The term derives from the Czech words *slib* (oath) and *ujet* (to ride), referring to the ritualized horseback procession that takes place on Easter Monday. This custom is believed to have pagan origins, later blending with Christian traditions.

The ritual typically involves a group of men, often dressed in traditional attire, riding horses through villages or towns. They may carry symbolic objects such as whips, bells, or branches, which they use to gently "whip" spectators or the ground as part of the ceremony. The whipping is thought to symbolize the driving away of evil spirits and the renewal of life. In some areas, the riders also sing folk songs or recite verses, sometimes accompanied by music.

Slibujete is most strongly associated with the village of Slatiňany in the Zlín Region, where it has been preserved as a cultural heritage practice. The event is often accompanied by local festivities, including food stalls, crafts, and other traditional activities. While the exact meaning of the ritual has evolved over time, it remains a vibrant expression of Czech folk culture, reflecting both historical customs and community spirit.
