Skógarlendi

Skógarlendi is an Icelandic term that translates to "forest land" or "woodland." It refers to areas dominated by trees, typically found in Iceland's more sheltered valleys and coastal regions where conditions are favorable for forest growth. While Iceland is known for its treeless landscapes, particularly in the Highlands, small pockets of natural forests and larger areas of afforestation have contributed to skógarlendi.

Historically, Iceland was more extensively forested before the arrival of Norse settlers. Deforestation due to extensive sheep grazing and timber use led to the decline of these forests. In recent decades, there has been a concerted effort towards reforestation and afforestation, aiming to increase forest cover for ecological, economic, and aesthetic reasons. These efforts have led to the expansion of skógarlendi in various parts of the country.

The types of trees found in Icelandic skógarlendi include birch (Betula pubescens) and various coniferous species like Sitka spruce and lodgepole pine, often planted in managed forests.
