SkyActivX

SkyActiv-X is an internal combustion engine technology developed by Mazda. It represents a significant advancement in gasoline engine design, aiming to combine the efficiency of diesel engines with the performance characteristics of gasoline engines. The core innovation of SkyActiv-X lies in its combustion process, known as Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI).

In SPCCI, the fuel-air mixture is ignited by a spark plug, similar to a conventional gasoline engine. However, at certain points in the combustion cycle, the conditions within the cylinder facilitate compression ignition, where the mixture ignites due to the high temperature and pressure. This dual ignition strategy allows for a leaner fuel-air mixture than typically possible in gasoline engines, leading to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

SkyActiv-X engines also incorporate technologies such as variable valve timing and lift, and a high compression ratio to further enhance efficiency. Mazda has integrated these advancements to offer an engine that delivers responsive acceleration and a satisfying driving experience while minimizing fuel consumption and harmful exhaust gases. The technology debuted in the Mazda3 and has since been rolled out to other Mazda models.
