Skumneopren

Skumneopren, or foam neoprene, is a closed-cell elastomer based on polychloroprene with gas-filled cells that provide buoyancy and insulation. It is widely used in aquatic gear and protective padding due to its combination of flexibleness, water resistance and thermal insulation.

The material is produced from neoprene polymer, formed by polymerizing chloroprene. Foam is created by either physical foaming or chemical blowing agents, resulting in a cellular structure with varying densities. Foam neoprene can be laminated to fabrics such as nylon or polyester, or supplied as solid sheets with textured surfaces. Densities commonly range from lightweight to more supportive grades, and cross-linking can enhance elasticity and durability.

Key properties include buoyancy, good resistance to water and many chemicals, and moderate abrasion resistance. It remains flexible over a wide temperature range, but can degrade with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light and chlorine. The closed-cell structure minimizes water absorption, contributing to insulation and buoyancy, but the material is not easily recyclable and can be difficult to dispose of at end of life. Some formulations are designed for improved UV stability and aging resistance.

Common applications are wetsuits, life vests, gloves, boots and other protective or insulating gear, as well as padding in sports equipment and certain packaging or acoustic panels.
