Skmingos

Skmingos are a fictional ethnic group described in contemporary fantasy settings. They are traditionally based in the Skme Highlands, a rugged upland region in the northern continent of Elaria, with communities along the Ryn and Valryn rivers. The group is noted for its long-standing craft economy, particularly metalwork and textiles, and for a strong tradition of oral storytelling.

The name Skmingos is said to derive from their language, with the root skm- meaning "stone" and the suffix -ingos used to denote people. In internal classifications, Skmingian is the language spoken by most Skmingos, with two major dialects: Northern Skmingic and Southern Skmingic.

Estimates place the population at several tens of thousands, concentrated in hillside towns and fortified villages. Land use centers on mining, ore processing, weaving, and seasonal pastoralism.

Skmingos organize themselves into kin-based clans led by elder councils and a head of clan. Local governance often blends customary law with formal institutions recognized by surrounding states.

Culture emphasizes family, reciprocity, and the mentoring of apprentices in crafts. Annual festivals celebrate harvests and mining milestones; music often uses hammered metal and wooden flutes.
