Skipuleigur refers to the practice of leasing or renting ships. This arrangement allows businesses or individuals to utilize vessels without the significant capital investment required for outright ownership. Various types of leasing agreements exist, differing in duration, responsibilities for maintenance and operation, and payment structures.

A common form is bareboat charter, where the lessee takes full control of the vessel, including crewing, manning, insurance, and maintenance. The owner essentially provides the hull and machinery, while the lessee operates it as if it were their own for a set period. In contrast, a time charter involves the owner providing the vessel with a crew, and the lessee directs its employment and itinerary. The owner remains responsible for the vessel's operation and upkeep.
