Skinnilämpötilaa is a Finnish term that translates to "skin temperature" in English. It refers to the temperature of the outermost layer of the skin. This measurement is distinct from core body temperature, which reflects the temperature of the body's internal organs. Skin temperature can fluctuate significantly due to external environmental factors like air temperature, humidity, and wind, as well as physiological factors such as blood flow to the skin surface and metabolic rate.

Measuring skin temperature is often done for diagnostic purposes in healthcare. For example, it can be used to assess peripheral circulation, detect inflammation, or monitor for conditions like hypothermia or fever. In sports and exercise science, skin temperature is also monitored to understand thermoregulation during physical activity. Different areas of the skin can exhibit different temperatures; for instance, extremities like fingers and toes are typically cooler than areas closer to the body's core due to their lower blood flow. Advances in technology have led to non-contact infrared thermometers being commonly used for quick and easy skin temperature readings.
