Skeletaalidysplasiat is a Finnish term for skeletal dysplasia, a group of hereditary disorders characterized by abnormalities in bone and cartilage growth. The conditions encompass more than 450 distinct subtypes that are classified based on clinical features, radiographic findings, and genetic causes. Skeletal dysplasias can affect the axial and appendicular skeleton, often leading to short stature, limb deformities, and distinctive facial features. Some forms, such as isomelic chondrodysplasia punctata or Osteogenesis imperfecta, result in brittle bones and frequent fractures, while others like achondroplasia cause disproportionate shortening of the limbs.

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of a detailed physical examination, radiographic imaging, and molecular genetic testing. Whole-exome sequencing and targeted gene panels are increasingly used to identify pathogenic variants in genes such as FGFR3, COL1A1, COL1A2, and many others. Prenatal diagnosis is possible via amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling when families have a known mutation. Prenatal ultrasonography may reveal characteristic bone abnormalities, but its sensitivity varies with the severity of the phenotype.

Management is multidisciplinary and tailored to the specific disorder. Medical care may include orthopedic interventions, physiotherapy, pain control, and monitoring for complications such as spinal cord compression or hearing loss. Genetic counseling is essential for affected families, particularly to discuss recurrence risks and options for future pregnancies. Advances in molecular therapies, such as early postnatal drug treatments for achondroplasia, are under investigation and hold promise for altering disease trajectories.
