Skegness

Skegness is a seaside town and civil parish in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies on the east coast facing the North Sea and is one of the county’s best-known traditional seaside resorts. The town’s seafront features long beaches, amusement arcades and family-friendly attractions that draw visitors year round.

Development as a holiday destination began in the late 19th century with the expansion of the railway network. The Great Northern Railway opened a line to Skegness in 1873, enabling easier access for day-trippers and holidaymakers and supporting lodging and amusements. In 1936, Billy Butlin opened Britain’s first purpose-built holiday camp in Skegness, a milestone in mass seaside tourism. The seafront also includes a historic pier and other leisure facilities added over time.

Today, tourism remains the town’s principal economic activity. In addition to the pier and beaches, attractions include the Natureland Seal Sanctuary, the coastal amusements along the Golden Mile, and seasonal events that attract visitors. The town serves as a commercial hub for the surrounding coastal area.

Administratively, Skegness is a civil parish within East Lindsey District and has its own town council. It is part of the Louth and Horncastle parliamentary constituency. The town is served by Skegness railway station and road connections via the A52, with bus services linking it to nearby towns and villages. The population is in the tens of thousands.
