Sivutuote

Sivutuote is a Finnish term for a by-product—the secondary product that arises in the course of producing a primary product. It is often the result of the separation, purification, or processing steps that accompany manufacturing. By-products may have utilitarian value or market demand, but they are not the main outcome of the production process.

The management of sivutuotteet is a common concern across industries. If by-products can be sold or repurposed, they can improve overall process efficiency and environmental performance; otherwise they may require disposal or treatment costs. Valorization strategies include selling as feedstock, using as raw material for different products, energy recovery, or recycling within the facility.

Industries commonly generating sivutuotteet include food processing (for example, fruit pomace, bran), agriculture (straw, hulls), metals and mining (slag, dusts), and chemicals (solvent stills, mixed streams). The value and regulatory treatment depend on local law and the quality of the by-product.

In some contexts by-products are distinguished from waste or from co-products. A co-product is produced alongside the main product with ongoing economic relevance; a by-product is secondary and often less valuable; waste is typically destined for disposal. Accurate classification affects accounting, liability, and environmental reporting.
