Sisalduvatele

Sisalduvatele is a traditional textile technique originating in the coastal regions of the Andean plateau, where the sisal (Agave sisalana) plant has been cultivated for centuries. The method involves spinning the raw sisal fibers into coarse yarns, then weaving them into mats, baskets and protective coverings for agricultural tools. The name is derived from the Quechua words “sisal” and “duvatu,” meaning “twist” and “wrap,” reflecting the fundamental motions of the craft.

Practitioners of sisalduvatele typically live in small villages along river valleys, where the abundant sisal fiber provides a renewable resource. The process begins by cutting the plant leaves, extracting the pulp, and then manually separating the fibrous strands. These strands are carded to align the fibers, then twisted with a small wooden spindle to form yarn. The yarn is woven using a pit loom or a hand loom, depending on the desired thickness of the final product. In addition to utilitarian uses, the mats produced by sisalduvatele are also employed in ceremonial contexts, such as covering offerings during local festivals.

Sisalduvatele has gained recognition as a sustainable craft, as sisal cultivation requires minimal irrigation and has a low environmental footprint.
