Sinustachikardia

Sinustachikardia refers to a heart rhythm where the heart rate is faster than normal, but the electrical impulses originate from the sinus node, the heart's natural pacemaker. This means the heart is beating too quickly, but the rhythm is regular and originates from the correct place. A normal resting heart rate for adults is typically between 60 and 100 beats per minute. When the heart rate exceeds 100 beats per minute in an adult at rest, it is considered tachycardia.

Sinustachikardia is not a disease itself but rather a symptom or a physiological response to an underlying condition or stress. Common causes include physical exertion, emotional stress, fever, dehydration, anemia, hyperthyroidism, certain medications (such as stimulants or decongestants), and withdrawal from alcohol or certain drugs. In some cases, it can also be a sign of more serious conditions like pulmonary embolism or heart failure.

The symptoms of sinustachikardia can vary depending on the underlying cause and how high the heart rate is. Some individuals may experience no symptoms at all, while others might feel palpitations, a racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest discomfort. Diagnosis typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) to confirm the heart rhythm and rate, along with a medical history and physical examination to identify potential causes. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying condition that is causing the rapid heart rate. For example, if caused by fever, treating the infection is key. If it's due to anxiety, stress management techniques might be employed. In most cases, once the underlying cause is resolved, the heart rate returns to normal.
