Sinadráttur

Sinadráttur, also known as "sina drift" or "sina driftur," is a traditional Icelandic folk dance that originated among rural communities. The term *sinadráttur* translates roughly to "sin dance" or "sinful dance," though the name is more likely derived from the Old Norse word *sindr* (meaning "to sin" or "to wander"), reflecting the lively, sometimes rowdy nature of the dance. It is characterized by its energetic, often improvised movements, typically performed in a circle or line formation.

The dance is closely associated with Icelandic *þjóðlaga* (folk songs) and *reykjavíkurvísur* (Icelandic folk poetry), often accompanied by traditional instruments such as the *hardanger fiddle*, *hardingur* (a type of lute), and *steypan* (a type of accordion). Sinadráttur was particularly popular during the 19th and early 20th centuries, serving as a form of social expression and entertainment at gatherings, weddings, and festivals.

The dance itself is informal and spontaneous, with participants moving freely in response to the music and each other.
