Silmätaudit

Silmätaudit is the Finnish term for eye diseases or ophthalmology. It encompasses a broad range of conditions affecting the eyes, their structures, and vision. These diseases can impact various parts of the eye, including the cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, and the surrounding ocular tissues.

Common eye diseases include refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, which can often be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Cataracts, a clouding of the eye's lens, is another prevalent condition, particularly among older adults, and can be treated with surgery. Glaucoma, characterized by damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased intraocular pressure, can lead to irreversible vision loss if not managed.

Other significant eye conditions include macular degeneration, which affects central vision, diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that damages blood vessels in the retina, and dry eye disease, a chronic condition causing discomfort and vision disturbances. Infections, injuries, and inflammatory conditions also fall under the umbrella of silmätaudit.
