Silmäsidekalvojen

Silmäsidekalvojen refers to the conjunctiva, a thin, transparent membrane that covers the outer surface of the eye and lines the inner surface of the eyelids. It is a mucous membrane that plays a crucial role in protecting and lubricating the eye. The conjunctiva is composed of stratified squamous epithelium and contains goblet cells that produce mucin, a component of the tear film. This tear film helps to keep the eye moist, washes away debris, and provides a smooth surface for clear vision.

The conjunctiva is divided into three parts: the bulbar conjunctiva, which covers the sclera (the white of the eye); the palpebral conjunctiva, which lines the inner surface of the eyelids; and the conjunctival fornix, which is the fold where the bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva meet. This structure allows for the free movement of the eyelids over the eyeball.

Inflammation of the conjunctiva is known as conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as "pink eye." This condition can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants. Symptoms of conjunctivitis include redness, itching, tearing, and discharge from the eye. While often mild and self-limiting, severe cases can lead to complications if left untreated. The conjunctiva is also susceptible to other conditions such as pterygium (a growth of conjunctival tissue onto the cornea) and pinguecula (a yellowish deposit on the conjunctiva).
